Hello, my name is Joseph and have been searching for a place to simply to ask for advice about a recent job offer. First my background, I am 22 years old and just received my bachelors degree from a smaller 4 year school in New Jersey. So, no ivy league degree or for that matter not even a great banking internship. I did work at Morgan Stanley for a short time in Private Wealth management and leaving because I have a passion for VC and PE and will do anything to find a way in. I soon will be enrolled in a part time MBA program.

A recent job offer I have encountered seems like it has its upside and downside coming from my current status. The job is for a very small venture capital firm looking to expand its business in the U.S. They were looking to hire a current college student part time possibly full time in order to be a VC deal source specialist. Basically it is private equity networking, marketing, researching, and selling. They would like me to go out and research and network in order to bring American deals to the table to present to the firm as well as try to find Institutional investors not necessarily for the same deals but just in general. The pay is very little, pretty much just college kid pay unless of course I do bring deals to the table and successfully help the firm grow then in which case bonuses will be given of course. Normally any job in PE or VC is decent pay however given the tremendous difficulty in finding a way to get your foot in the door in this business especially coming from my background I am wondering if this is the type of opportunity I should be looking for. Im sure it will be educational, although they are not huge company working on several deals at once, I will be able to see deals form beginning to end in terms of researching, valuation, negotiation etc which is an opportunity someone in my position may not to get again with out any ivy league degree or I-Banking experience. So the overall question is, does this sound like a good opportunity to finally get some private equity experience on my resume regardless of the pay and also does the position requirements sound possible given that the city I am working in is New York. Keep in mind at first it will be part time and can work from home if wanted to being that this is of course a self starting position researching and bringing in potential companies and investors on my own. Also, like I said PE and or VC (same thing now a days) is really something that I know I want to be part of and educated in. Please and thank you for the truthful response and advice.

Joseph
